Child abuse in religion

2012 09 19

Seriously, what is wrong with religious people? Could it be that the thought of being the unworthy child of a celestial dictator somehow leads to treating children with careless disregard? This apparent need to subjugate, indoctrinate and mutilate, and to keep ignorant, defenseless beings seems to be inherent in, and integral to, most religions; especially the Abrahamic ones.

The great book of multiple choice orders parents of an unruly son to take him to the elders

And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die (Deuteronomy 21:21)

and offers gems like

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes (Proverbs 13:24)

or

For everyone that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death. (Leviticus 20:9)

Christian values my ass!

Then Jews and Muslims have this strange fascination with cutting off parts of their children's genitalia, and because the parents have been indoctrinated as children themselves, they just don't see that what they are doing is just plain wicked.

Evangelical Christians in the US are doing their best (or worst) to keep children ignorant and force their ridiculous beliefs on them and others, trying to make schools teach creationism – so-called intelligent design – as science. Children in Poland (and who knows where else...) apparently have to suffer through strange initiation rites in Catholic schools, licking cream off priests' legs!? Not to mention churches protecting abusive priests from prosecution; and not even talking about the psychological abuse that comes from being taught that one is born sick or destined to eternally suffer for some stupid reason or another.

I could go on and on listing the atrocities that religion is inflicting on children everyday, but there are already lots of pages dedicated to that, so I'll just end with saying this: If you and your religion have no respect for your child's body and mind, I have no respect for either you or your religion.
